I put a thin layer of permatex on the gasket (only the side going to the valve cover , put it on the valve cover and immdiately bolt it on. I use rubber if i'm using cast valve covers and cork if i'm doing stamped steel covers. It appear to be leaking some oil on the rear side (on the driver side). The advantage of rubber is supposed to be that you don't have to change the gasket every time you remove the covers. That being said rubber is the way to go because they are reusable.
On The Other Hand, The Rubber Ones From Felpro With A Small Bead Of Black Rtv Haven't Ever Leaked, Even When I Had To Take The Valve Covers Off And Just Reused The Same Gaskets.
My grey beard hot rod guru got to my car with two stacked cork gaskets to buy me roller rocker clearance and i haven’t had a valve cover oil leak in years. Cork or rubber gaskets work.i use edelbrock gasgacinch to glue the gasket to the valve cover. Let it dry,pop it on.

Some cheeply made rubber gaskets tend to become more inferior when compared to cork varieties.they fail far sooner than a decent/half decent cork gasket material. Rubber gaskets in my experience leak leak leak. Install the gasket on the valve cover.
