Sometimes in a 4 power tube amp, one power tube will fail and this will cause the amp to hum. They can be handy in certain situations for temporary silencing of the circuit, but they are not necessary.

Tube amps should not be left in standby mode while powered up for long lengths of time.it can cause cathode poisoning. Turn your volume control down lower than your gain and your hiss should dissipate.

If you yell at the tube and you hear your voice from the speaker then it is microphonic; (2204) the hiss is there without the guitar plugged in.

Btw hiss and microphonic are 2 different things. If hum or hiss still persists, you might have a bad component (or a bad tube, i know of which i speak), or a bad electrical connection between the wall outlet and the house power panel.

Btw hiss and microphonic are 2 different things. Carbon comp resistors exhibit more thermal noise than other resistors in high voltage.

Listen To The Speaker Carefully, In A Quiet Room, To Confirm That It Is, Indeed, Not Passing Any Signal Whatsoever.

Some amps hiss brand new (by design) and some develop hiss over time (as components like carbon composite resistors deteriorate). The rectifier tube could be causing hum as well. If your amp is still hissing, check your controls.
