Valve Keepers Stuck

Valve Keepers Stuck. It then takes more pressure than normally required. Looking for advice before i make a new tool:

It is just a little stuck because the keepers are designed to wedge against the valve stem and into the collar. E ven engine builders with years of experience have valve failure at some point, but knowing what caused the failure is the difference between a builder who will learn from the mistake and figure out the solution versus one who will continue to make the same mistake time and time again. Moving the retainers, springs, etc shouldn't be a problem.

The Exhaust Valve Could Not Be Removed From The Valve Guide By Hand And Was Removed Utilizing A Hammer And A Drift.

When you compress the springs, pick keepers out. The sudden release and reapplication of tension works fairly well to dislodge stuck keepers. Or with a small hammer as bill said if they are really stuck.

Try Not To Damage The Valve/Spring/Keeper By Swinging Inaccurately Or With Too Much Force.

Thanked 7 times in 7 posts. To hold the valves up with the keepers and springs removed, i prefer the method of filling the cylinder with 3/16 nylon rope rather than using compressed air for a couple of reasons. The rocker arm, valve keepers, and springs were removed.

Set That On The Spring, Give It A Whack With A Hammer And The Spring Will Compress And Keepers Will Come Off, And Now The Spring Is Disassembled.

I've gotten 4 valves out, but the other 4 are creating a problem. Take spark plugs out turn that cylinder piston up to tdc and you should be able to compress spring with a screw type compressor and put new used keepers on. And tap all the keepers with a hammer hit.

It Is Just A Little Stuck Because The Keepers Are Designed To Wedge Against The Valve Stem And Into The Collar.

Small pen magnet easily snagged the keepers. However you don't need to weld anything. It then takes more pressure than normally required.

My Question Is How Do I Get These Stems That Are Stuck Out, And Can I Use Different Valve Keepers Than What's In There Already, Oem Valve Keepers Run 60 Bucks.

Sticking valves are caused by excessive deposits of lead or contaminants in the valve guide or by valve seat wear which allows the fatter bottom part of the stem to travel farther than it is supposed to up into the bottom of the guide when the valve is closing—the latter is especially true on the small continentals. Just take a med sized hammer and go down the whole row of valves, giving the upper/outer edge of the retainer a moderate rap, don't pound it, just a nice sharp tap, will disslodge the keepers ready for removal. The exhaust valve exhibited combustion deposits on the stem close to the rear of the valve face.
