Hi All, I've Got A Radiator In My Bathroom Leaking Badly Around The Valve Spindle, Went To Loosen Off The Gland Nut In Order To Pack The Spindle With Ptfe But As I Unscrewed The Nut It Started Squirting Water Out Around It.


Drain the heating system of water; Turn off the valve first, and the valve on the other side, too, if it continues to leak. Valves for outdoor applications should also have lubrication facilities for the handwheel nut.

If You Traced The Leak In Your Radiator To The Valve But The Water Is Coming From Under The Cap, Then It Could Be Caused By A Problem With The Gland.


If the radiator valve coupling nut is the cause of the leak, this can often be sorted by tightening the coupling or replacing the olive inside the coupling. If the leak persists, undo the nut and wind a few turns of ptfe tape down into the spindle. In most cases this will stop the leak.

You Should Have No More Leaks!


Just remove the decorative cover from the valve. If your radiator’s still leaky, you might need to revaluate why the radiator is leaking and follow our steps to check where the leak is coming from. That external nut would have to have a ring part of it to push against packing properly, or you have come across the type that have a seperate brass ring part below the nut.
