Jan shows how to fix that radiator valve in 2 minutes. That external nut would have to have a ring part of it to push against packing properly, or you have come across the type that have a seperate brass ring part below the nut.

It looks identical to the other rad valves in my house (two of which i've removed the nuts and packed in this way just fine). The yoke is clamped to the bonnet.

Turn off the valve first, and the valve on the other side, too, if it continues to leak. This should, hopefully, stop it however, if not, undo the gland nut, wrap some pfte tape down into the spindle and then tighten it back up again.

The second pic is the new replacement cartridge. Remove the nuts and adaptors on the new vave and smear the thread that joins to the radiator with the wrap the ptfe tape around clockwise about 8 times to prevent any leaks.

In Most Cases This Will Stop The Leak.

The system does not have to be drained to do this (see above). If a valve leaks water from this point you may be able to tighten the gland nut. If necessary, use a new insert (compare point 20).
